You Can 3D Print That? Fidget Spinners, Light Holders, SLINKYS, & MORE!
Since I got my first 3D printer in 2021 I have absolutely fallen in love with the hobby. I have designed and created and 3D printed so many things that people often wonder " hey you can 3D print that? ". One of the things I enjoy most is making 3D printed items for my kids, my wife, and our friends. Let's take a look at some of the more fun things that I've been printing lately on my bamboo labs P1P, P1S, and Creality Ender 3v3, K1, and K1C.
My youngest daughter absolutely loves slinkies, she thinks they are the absolute coolest thing and cannot get enough of them. From the way they move in our hands, watching them go down the stairs, alone or in pairs, or just swooshing it back and forth in her hands. I recently picked up some rainbow filament that I'm going to use to print some items for CORGS CON in Central Ohio in June. While I was working on those designs I wondered if I could actually 3D print a slinky. sure enough, I was able to print one and the results are fantastic. I love the colors, I love the way it came out, and I love the fact that she breaks it I can just print another one.
Furologee recently sent us one of their RGB equipped desks, and I was a bit surprised to see that the LED lighting for the desk wasn't built into the components but had to actually be stuck to the different parts of the desk. having used lights with adhesive for my LED light boxes I print and sell, I knew that I was not a big fan of relying just on the adhesive. so I designed a clip that would go over the edge of the desk top and the LED lights would simply slide into. this way the clip actually holds the light securely and I don't have to worry about the glue coming loose.
My oldest daughter is a huge fan of the movie Lilo & Stitch, and having designed and printed quite a few LED light boxes over the years I wanted to make her something special. as such, I printed her out a stitch LED light box that she can change the colors on and have in her classroom or in her bedroom. The sound that she made when I showed it to her made the time and effort to Make this for her totally worthwhile.
The final thing I 3D printed recently was a fidget spinner. this is not my original file but something that I found on the makers World website that Bambu Labs hosts. I printed the original one out at full size using the rainbow color filament again, but it was just a little bit too big for my youngest daughters hands. I decided to shrink it down in my software and print it again at 70% of the original size, and it's now small enough that she can hold it in her hand while being large enough for her to still have fun with.
like with any technological based hobby, 3D printing absolutely can have its pain points and frustrations. I'm glad I finally decided to take the plunge and embrace this hobby fully. it's been a nice side business and source of income, but it's also allowed me to create some pretty cool things for my kids. And seeing their faces light up when I hand them something I took time out of my day to make for them, makes it all worthwhile.
