JustFlight PA-38 Tomahawk Testing in Croix de Coeur, near Verbier, Switzerland. MS Flight Simulator
This is a video of short flights to test how the PA-38 Tomahawk works and flies between 6,000 and 8,000 feet altitude.
This is not a very powerful aircraft, so the fun here is to manage it properly, as we don't have the power of a fighter jet to save us from bad flight management... Steep climbs are not possible with such an aircraft!
However, I fly it also slowly, close to stalling...
I want to try take offs and landings at this altitude, on a sloped grass airstrip.
Croix de Coeur, above Verbier in Switzerland is a perfect location for this type of testing.
I try take offs with and WITHOUT flaps deployed: no problem.
I land testing the effect of flaps. Full flaps slow down the aircraft so much that I need FULL power for the approach.
I found that the approach and landing work best with flaps down to only half: I don't need much power. Full flaps work best as an air brake, to slow down.
Of course here, the landing is done on an airstrip that goes up, so I need to go fast enough, as before touch down, I have to climb in order to touch down with the main gear first. If I don't climb just before touching the ground, I would hit the front wheel, and this nearly always spells disaster...
For the last landing, I decided to turn off the engine, so I climb a bit higher before turning off the engine, for a powerless approach and landing. Watch from 13:00...
The easiest way is to be a bit too high, and use full flaps as air brake as needed, but end with only half flaps.
I start ready for take off and end in Cold & Dark. Enjoy!
