MiSTer FPGA - Super Dimension Fortress Macross 2036 (超時空要塞マクロス2036) / PC Engine CD (TurboGrafx CD)
11**WATCH IN 1440p/60!** The legendary anime series Macross got a couple Japan-only side-story shooter releases on PC Engine in the early 90's, complete with cutscenes and voice acting throughout. This is my second playthrough of the game after learning the stages and weapons a bit on my first run. Overall a pretty average shooter, that may be worth revisiting on a harder difficulty setting. In elementary school, the only thing that could get me to wake up extra-early in the morning before classes was catching the English adaptation of Macross, called Robotech. At the time I'd never experienced an animated series of any kind that functioned more as a continuing series as opposed to stand-alone episodes. I remember feeling crushed when the entire cast was suddenly gone and you were instead watching their descendants carry on the story a generation later. The sadness quickly faded when I realized things would only continue to get better, even if the same characters I'd grown attached to had changed. An early life lesson of sorts, I guess. Macross will always have a place in my heart and memory for the years I enjoyed it then.
Loved the secondary weapon variety & anime vibe to them, though overall stage and enemy design are lacking, with cheap deaths from things flying in from various parts of the screen. You get a warning when in front or behind of where the enemies fly in, but this doesn't always show if you aren't on the same vertical level, so you'll often move to dodge into ships that you had no idea were approaching.
Visual Mode
In the later part of the video after the game concludes, I show the hidden "Visual Mode" which just plays the cutscenes back-to-back, in case you would prefer to skip the pew pew shooting parts. To access this mode, set Button I to 64ms turbofire, and at the PC Engine CD BIOS loading screen hold Button II and then press Run while continuing to hold Button II. Immediately after pressing Run, hold down Button I as well. As long as you have the turbofire set to the original controllers "MAX" position (64ms turbo on MiSTer), it will skip the Masaya logo and immediately begin playing back all cutscenes in order.
Stage Select
To practice individual levels, hold diagonal Up/Right + Select + Button I (with turbo off) on the title screen, and then press Button II to cycle an invisible stage counter. (Press 3 times for Stage 3, etc.)
MiSTer's PC Engine core was transformed into the most accurate way to play this console besides original hardware, largely in part thanks to efforts by srg320. He also created our SNES, Sega CD and Sega 32x cores, and is currently working on a Sega Saturn core for MiSTer.
