MiSTer FPGA - Fightin' Spirit [Kento 1cc] / Amiga
Thanks to @damgentemp and @dantemendes on Twitter for the recommend on this one! I hadn't played a decent fighting game on Amiga before, so this was a nice surprise! Pretty amazing artwork and sound design here, with some sprites and background portions ripped-off from SNK classics. The only major downside is that controls are a bit stiff feeling and input windows are not properly implemented. Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com
Be sure to set the controls to "CD32" in both the core and game, and map your buttons in the options as well. Also, make sure to *NEVER* hit the "B" button in-between matches in the Story mode, otherwise the game will just dump you back to the title screen. This addition without a prompt asking if you actually want to return there, is really terrible design for such a game mode. It's basically a "lose up to 30 minutes of progress" button.
--Special move list: http://hol.abime.net/530/miscshot
--Boss characters are playable by holding right for ~5 seconds on "EXIT" in the Options menu, turning the game into "SUPER Fightin' Spirit", as shown in the video @ 44:17. I also show the hidden screen that hints on how to unlock them, their special moves list, and other secrets @ 43:36.
Characters have 4 special moves each, though the charge moves do not give a good enough input window to be pulled off reliably. It's best to avoid using those for characters that have them, otherwise you're just going to do normal attacks instead a majority of the time.
Burke and the tiger, Rhajang are without a doubt the hardest opponents in the game. I was lucky to get Burke as the first battle in this playthrough, making him easier than normal & found you can cheese the tiger out with the dragon flame move!
Overall this is an admirable effort on the Amiga, with some of the best pixel art and color use in a game I've seen on the system yet- especially in the stage backgrounds. I think a majority of the characters are reskinned assets from SNK games, with Art of Fighting in particular seeming to be heavily borrowed-from. Pretty hilarious seeing "Copyright S.N.C." at the end of the credits!
Thanks to the great number of folks who have worked on Minimig for nearly two decades now, resulting in the awesome Amiga core we have on MiSTer. Special shout-out to the Mega Boys for making this classic computer so accessible to newcomers, with the excellent MegaAGS pack.
