MiSTer FPGA - Ghost in the Shell (攻殻機動隊) [No Death] / PlayStation
Ghost in the Shell was the 2nd game I bought for PS1, after Street Fighter Alpha 3. This game was made by Exact, who pioneered this type of 3D action gameplay on the X68000 computer with Geograph Seal- a game I was delighted to stumble upon last year: https://youtu.be/QKTfatk73Xk. The similarities are uncanny with both the mission briefings & gameplay design. Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com
This game looks fantastic with scanlines and shadow mask, but is too noisy for 1080p YouTube at full size. See recommended settings below!
I always loved the freedom of movement once you master the controls in this game. It becomes very intuitive and was unlike anything I had played at the time. There is some slight annoyance when you cling to walls unintentionally, but you can quickly remedy this by just tapping the jump button without holding any d-pad directions. Holding the bumper buttons on the controller constantly can lead to discomfort after prolonged sessions, and for this reason I recommend using a controller with rear-paddles if you have one available, as I found it to be much more comfortable here. In this video I used the DualShock 4 controller with back-paddle attachment. With the digital-only controls in this game, you can easily use a SNES or Saturn controller if you'd prefer.
Pretty amazing soundtrack here also- featuring great techno producers like Derrick May, The Advent and Joey Beltram! And those Production I.G cutscenes! 🤩
While playing through and recording test footage for this game, I found that the recently-released PlayStation CPU 2X core plays it flawlessly and improves the framerate dramatically, with no change to game logic/speed. This is a must-try for fans of the game and I'll record an accompanying video of the Japanese version of the game with this overclock core soon.

Fun fact: The massive skyscraper that the final levels of the game take place in, is an actual 500-story building concept that was planned to be built in Tokyo Bay, called "Aeropolis 2001". If you look up designs for it, they are the same as what's seen in the game @ 43:53.
The PlayStation core was created by FPGAzumSpass, whom previously brought us the GBA, Lynx and WonderSwan cores, along with enhancements to the Game Boy and NES cores, and significantly improved performance in the AO486 core.
