***WATCH IN 1080p QUALITY ONLY*** In this follow-up to yesterday's video of the USA version, I'm using the PSX CPU 2X core for a much higher framerate. (Comparison below!) Youtube 1080p needed smaller integer scale for quick action with higher framerate- otherwise too noisy. With this scale I'm able to use scanlines also, matched to component on CRT. Try MG Stripe shadow mask for best image! Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com

USA version with normal core/settings for comparison: https://youtu.be/WJp3Pb0JVkk

The CPU 2X core helps dramatically in this game, with a much better framerate that results in increased responsiveness to controls. No negative impact- game speed/logic is unchanged! These are the differences I noted:

--Normal PlayStation:
Average = 20-35 FPS
High = ~40 FPS
Minimum = 11 FPS (Stage 9 boss)

--PlayStation CPU 2x core:
Average = 40-55 FPS
High = 60 FPS
Minimum = 29 FPS (Stage 9 boss)

Best places to compare:
Stage 9 reactor boss - 35:58
Stage 10 twin-mecha boss - 40:51
Stage 12 final boss - 49:58

I always loved the freedom of movement once you master the controls in this game. It becomes very intuitive and was unlike anything I had played at the time. There is some slight annoyance when you cling to walls unintentionally, but you can quickly remedy this by just tapping the jump button without holding any d-pad directions. Holding the bumper buttons on the controller constantly can lead to discomfort after prolonged sessions, and for this reason I recommend using a controller with rear-paddles if you have one available, as I found it to be much more comfortable here. In this video I used the DualShock 4 controller with back-paddle attachment. With the digital-only controls in this game, you can easily use a SNES or Saturn controller if you'd prefer.

Pretty amazing soundtrack here also- featuring great techno producers like Derrick May, The Advent and Joey Beltram! And those Production I.G cutscenes! 🤩

Fun fact: The massive skyscraper that the final levels of the game take place in, is an actual 500-story building concept that was planned to be built in Tokyo Bay, called "Aeropolis 2001". If you look up designs for it, they are the same as what's seen in the game @ 42:33.

The PlayStation core was created by FPGAzumSpass, whom previously brought us the GBA, Lynx and WonderSwan cores, along with enhancements to the Game Boy and NES cores, and significantly improved performance in the AO486 core.
