Three of THE BEST Non-Mario Centric Franchises from Nintendo
If Disney is the house of Mouse then clearly Nintendo is the house of a plumber. We all know and love Mario and his adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom, along with the adventures of his brother Luigi whether with Mario or in his Mansion, Yoshi, Princess Peach, Toad, and even Wario. But Nintendo has more franchises under its belt than just Mario and Company. So here are three of my favorite non-Mario Centric franchises from Nintendo.
Number 3:
The Legend of Zelda
Some people may rank this higher but for me, the games that miss the mark really miss the mark. Link to the Past is one of my favorite games of all time, however, and unlike games such as Breath of the Wild it has a more linear story that I enjoy a whole lot more. I also thought Link to the Past was beautiful in the art and the music, and while Breath of the Wild is a stunning-looking and sounding game the overall gameplay does not put it very high for me.
Number 2:
Donkey Kong Country
I am so glad we got to return to this franchise on the 3DS and on the Wii because, my goodness, the entries in the series have been fantastic. Granted, there is a Mario connection between Donkey Kong and Mario, but the two games and series have diverged enough that I think that they qualify as separate at this point. I do think Tropical Freeze is absolutely stunning whether you're playing on the Wii U or on the Nintendo Switch and it is so much fun. I cannot wait to see what lies next in this series.
Number 1:
Kirby
This may seem like an odd entry but stay with me here. One of the things I love about Kirby is that, since the very beginning, it was designed to be a game accessible to just about everyone with a low barrier to entry. This means you don't need to struggle through learning curves, knowing a bunch of previous lower, or anything along those lines. There are very few games in the franchise that miss and I will say the latest games have been absolutely fantastic. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is absolutely a masterpiece and I think a truly underrated game on the Switch.
