It was an unexpected pairing of franchises. But, to most people’s amazement, 2017’s Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle ended up being a surprisingly good turn-based strategy game.
Five years later, Ubisoft has now released a sequel: Sparks of Hope. But is this one as good as the original?
Now that the novelty of the Mushroom Kingdom and Rabbids mash-up has lost some of its potency, Sparks of Hope doesn’t have to employ any plot gymnastics to convince the player that what they are seeing makes sense.
In fact, making more sense is really where Sparks of Hope shows the most improvement from its predecessor.
The skill tree and upgrading system is simplified and less confusing. The overworld is easier to navigate and no longer feels like a labyrinth. And each character has a more defined and purposeful role.
And the new Sparks mechanic is an appreciated addition that adds an extra level of strategy to each battle.
When Sparks of Hope was announced, I wasn’t entirely convinced that we needed this sequel. But, because of all the refinements and additions, I ended up really enjoying my time with this game.
