MiSTer FPGA - Final Fantasy VI (ファイナルファンタジーVI) / SNES (Super Famicom)
***Use 1080p quality only! Uses heavy filtering- boost TV brightness ~20%! Noise in title sequence and Mode7 is from YouTube's re-encoding, and not present in original video.*** The 35th anniversary of the series is today, and I'd like to show FF6 as close to original presentation as possible. First priority for filter balance was given to Amano's char/enemy artwork, then backgrounds and chibi characters. Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? This one took a *long* time for me to dial in correctly. The balancing was very difficult with how fond I have been of this game since it's release. I matched dozens of different elements to the perceived blend/gamma I saw on a 32 inch trinitron via component signal, but aimed more towards a middle ground between s-video and component/RGB quality, as I feel this best blends the overall art style here. It's a balancing act and is certainly not perfect- perhaps a bit too dark for some folks' taste with the heavier scanlines. I kept things intentionally neutral so a local brightness/contrast boost on the display/TV can be used to dial things in brighter if desired. Heavier scanlines are absolutely necessary to get the original look in this game- no question about it. Small things like the rectangular highlight on Terra's ponytail, and the way Moogles white center blends with the outer shaded portion, can never look correct without them being this heavy at least. Analyzing the graphics in the game like never before with this video, I learned much about the advanced techniques that Square and other classic game studios used on pixel art games designed to be viewed on a CRT like this. The subtle use of black and grey pixels for outlines in various elements helps to blend inside colors with the outer edges to create additional detail. This is very important to the presentation in this game, especially the Amano artwork that was digitized.
5x scaling surprisingly is a near-perfect fit here, only cutting off minor portions of the top and bottom during mode 7 sequences, and during the title sequence. Sacrificing these one or two pixel rows is worth it to get perfect scanlines without smaller integer scaling which would have large borders. Everything else in the game is intact and not cut off at all. Totally worth it.
Still to this day, this remains one of the best RPG's of all-time. It's such an amazing production! This video was my first time playing through it efficiently without farming also, which I tend to do heavily in most RPG's. In FF6, it's best wait until you have Espers to farm.
The SNES core was made by srg320, whom also made the Sega CD, PC Engine CD and Genesis 32X cores. He is currently bringing the Sega Saturn to MiSTer as well.
