It’s easy and tempting to write this game off as nothing but a Twisted Metal knock-off. It is a valid comparison since their gameplay styles are quite similar and their anarchic spirits are pretty similar. Vigilante 8 has a fun premise by setting the game in the 1970’s in an alternate universe with a story that is somewhat akin to Mad Max with a little bit of modern punk. A shame there isn’t a lot to go on beyond that, though. What’s an even bigger shame is how short the game is. Only four levels. Sure, you can play as multiple characters throughout and the game’s brevity makes it feasible. The rather lackluster gameplay, which might have been better with more destructive environments and deeper game design, doesn’t help matters. It’s perfectly playable throughout and doesn’t do anything to offend or alarm the senses, but it fades quickly. The game’s artwork is the real standout, but what appears on the surface doesn’t quite match.
