1997, N64. Rating: 3.5 out of 4 stars

Developer Rareware delivered their best game to date by going above and beyond the expectations of a typical movie adaptation for a video game. A great deal of time and attention was given to creating a multifaceted first-person shooter that delivered the usual thrills of the genre, but also felt like a spy game. In other words, you felt like 007. The 1995 movie’s structure gave the developers plenty to work with for the single-player campaign. They weren’t content to rest on their laurels, though. They made each mission stand out and offered plenty of thrills.

In an unusual twist (at the time), Rare designed the game so the gamer had to complete certain objectives to finish the level. Some of them were point A to point B objectives and others required some finesse and precision on the gamer’s part. You could even fail them, which amped up the tension. Most of these work quite well, though a few are subject to spotty ally AI, which can lead to a few cheap deaths.

The visuals aren’t remarkable, but they are clean and rarely cause issues during gameplay. Some of the character physics and movement when enemies are shot is quite impressive even today. The controls are smooth and fluid and take advantage of the N64 controller. The music, like the movie, is a bit on the experimental side, but it works well here without being obtrusive. Same with the sound effects. The cheats throughout the game, which are gained by beating levels under certain times on various difficulties, add a nice layer of depth. There are also two hidden missions that take a few cues and ideas from the Roger Moore era.

Then there’s the multiplayer, which set the bar for future first-person shooters. Even today, it works extremely well as a party game because the levels are well-designed and the game modes created allow for fast and furious action regardless of what you’re playing.

The only real drawbacks are the occasional framerate drips and the Severnaya missions the first time around feel a bit tacked on. Hit detection is also spotty in a couple places and can cause frustration in some of the later stages.

Goldeneye 007 was heralded as a classic when first released and for good reason. The game, perhaps even more than the movie, helped usher in a new generation of James Bond fans. And they keep coming back even today for a game that is every bit as good now as it was then.
