What's a Rougelike? - Origins to Indie Staple
Roguelikes are a popular subgenre of game for their near infinite replay-ability. However all sorts of games have been called a "roguelike", so what does the term actually mean?
In this video I discuss one of the more common definitions, "The Berlin Interpretation", and how many indie games we call roguelikes don't really fit the bill. Yet in spite of that the Berlin Interpretation is a fairly disputed definition, because "Roguelites" are just a broader adaptation of a core gameplay loop which relies on random generation and dungeon runs.
These kinds of games are some of my favorites, both traditional roguelikes and the modern indie take on the genre, so I was excited to talk about them.
One thing which holds back some of the more narrative-heavy roguelikes is the inability for the story to also be procedural to some extent. With recent advances in AI art and storytelling I wonder if future roguelikes will have a properly coherent, procedural method of generating stories.
