Def Jam Fight for NewYork was released on September 21, 2004 and is the sequel to Def Jam Vendetta. At recording of this video, a copy of DefJam Fight For NewYork for the Playstation 2 goes for anywhere between $120 up to $250 depending on the condition of the game. Is this game worth the high price tag? Or is it overpriced? I went to my local retro game store and purchased DefJam Fight for NewYork for $145 so you don’t have to. With that said, let's get into it.

Starting off with the UI Menu, it doesn’t get anymore simpler than this. You have 8 options and they’re self explanatory. You have your Story mode, the battle mode, and a few other additional stuff for you to check out. I also have to stop for a second and give credit to the soundtrack, because I am a big hiphop fan and if you enjoy that kind of music, you are really going to enjoy the soundtrack in this game. This game has over 30 plus classic hip hop songs with the likes of Busta Rymes, Method Man, Ice T, Xzibit, OutKast, and many more. This game just has a great selection of songs and I had to point that out.

With that said, let's get into the battle mode. Once you select the battle mode, you are greeted with 9 different fighting modes. You have your One on one, Team battle, Free for all, Cage match, and even unique fighting modes such as window match, subway match, and inferno match. On top of that, this game features over 60 plus usable characters that have their own unique fight stats and abilities. But the best part about Def Jam Fight For Newyork, all of the characters can be unlocked just by playing the game. Most modern games nowadays would have just released this game with 10 characters and attempt to sell you the rest through DLC. So, playing this was just a breath of fresh air.

Lastly, let’s get into the story and does it hold up today? To put it simply, yes. I found myself having a great time playing the story mode. The story starts off with you creating a player and you end up helping D-Mob and in return he lets you join his crew. As you fight your way through different clubs gaining respect from your gang while your rival gang takes note. I was quite surprised to find out how challenging some of the fights were, especially against Ice T, Crack, and Crow. This game also has 5 different fighting styles for you to choose from. Streetfighter, martial arts, wrestling, submissions, and kickboxer. Not only that, the way the game controls and plays feels good. It’s not overly complicated. The overall story is good, yet a little bit repetitive at times. Once you conquer one club, you go and fight in another club and so on and so forth. I did however enjoy how in the story mode; it allowed you to customize your created character in different ways and you were able to unlock trophies. This game actually gives you challenges to go for, which I enjoyed.

I haven’t played DefJam Fight For NewYork in over 10 plus years. And after being able to replay the game from start to finish, I would have to rate DefJam Fight For NewYork a 80/100. As much as I enjoyed the gameplay, soundtrack, and story, I think this game's high asking price is a bit steep. But with that said, let me know if you agree or disagree. I hope you enjoy this video, Im FGB and Im out.
