Freedom Planet - Part 46 - Card Gallery (Complete)
20So I did an exhaustive search of the main stages in the game to find those 100 Gallery Cards. I mentioned it wouldn't be complete if I didn't show off what they unlock, now would we? (If we're splitting hairs, a gallery is where an artist goes to sell his or her artwork, but well, I already bought the game and this artwork is likely not for sale. But the popular meaning of a gallery doesn't involve any buying or selling.)
Contrary to its name, artwork makes up only a minority of the unlockables in the Gallery. Rather, most of the things you get from finding Gallery Cards are this game's music. It's a pretty complete soundtrack, meaning the Gallery essentially functions as this game's sound test. Looking at how the artwork is limited to concept sketches of each of the important characters (as well as an early sprite of Torque) and the rest of the unlockables are miscellaneous voice clips (including an outtake session from Victoria Vitti, voice of Syntax), I would guess that being a sound test was the primary intended function of this gallery.
I know 100 is already a pretty steep number, but I would've liked to see some design ideas for landscapes and backgrounds too, and maybe some creator commentary or flavor text. Paper Mario: Color Splash has a separate sound test and a LOT of concept art (would any of you be interested in me showing that?). Then again, I've always loved these behind-the-scenes things, which is why I continue to buy movies and TV on home video when a lot of other peolpe have moved strictly to streaming. That, and getting them on physical media ensures I can still watch them even after the streaming services remove them. (Remember when Hulu erased about 98% of its anime catalog all in one night?)
In any case, this concludes my coverage for Freedom Planet! (There might be more later if I feel like it though.) The next playthrough will be the long-awaited Sonic Mania.
